Ukraine remains one of the key countries in the production and extraction of natural gas despite the complex geopolitical situation. Gas is an important energy resource that ensures the energy independence of the state.
According to the Portal of the Extraction Industry, there are three oil and gas regions in Ukraine:
- Eastern — Dnipropetrovsk, Luhansk, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Donetsk regions;
- Western — Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Volyn, Zakarpattia regions;
- Southern — Odesa, Zaporizhzhia regions, the shelf of the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
How Many Gas Fields Are in Ukraine
There are 467 natural gas fields in the country, of which 101 are located in Poltava region, 83 in Kharkiv, and 76 in Lviv. Among them, there are large, medium, small, and very small fields.
The total reserves of natural gas in Ukraine at the beginning of 2019 amounted to 804,369 million cubic meters. The largest reserves are located in the Eastern region, especially in Kharkiv and Poltava regions, with reduced reserves in the Western and Southern regions.
