What Matters More Than Enrollment: The Key Condition for Students to Keep Their Draft Deferment.
Deferment from Mobilization for Students
According to Novyny.live: Students at Ukrainian higher education institutions are entitled to a deferment from military mobilization. However, this right does not automatically remain valid simply because their educational information appears in the 'Reserve+' app. As of December 2025, 'Reserve+' has become the sole legally recognized document for citizens registered for military service. This change was introduced to streamline the process of verifying the status of students subject to conscription into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
The deferment from mobilization is a crucial right that allows students to continue their studies without interruption for military service. It is important to note that this deferment is not granted automatically. To confirm it, the student's educational data must be entered into the 'Reserve+' application. Electronic military registration documents were introduced during martial law to simplify the tracking of individuals classified as 'military liable.'
The Role of the 'Reserve+' System
According to Vladyslav Deriy, a representative of the Territorial Recruitment Centers (TCC),
“for the TCC, the main proof of your right to a deferment is not the education record itself, but the record indicating the deferment is present in the 'Oberih' registry.”Therefore, students must ensure their data in the system is up to date to avoid future complications.
All Ukrainian citizens with the status of 'military liable' are subject to mobilization, making it essential to understand one's rights and obligations in this area. The 'Reserve+' system provides a clear mechanism for confirming educational status and deferments, making the process more transparent and understandable for students.
The introduction of the 'Reserve+' system marks a significant step toward improving military registration and mobilization procedures, especially given current challenges. Students eligible for a deferment must be aware of their rights and actively monitor the accuracy of their educational information, as this can directly affect their status in the military registration system. This innovation is expected to reduce administrative hurdles and enhance cooperation between students and military authorities.
