Ukrainians Being Labeled 'Russian Soldiers' in Vienna Prompts Memory Institute to Organize Conference.
Distortion of Ukrainian History in World War II
According to Espreso.tv: Oleksandr Alfiorov, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, has highlighted the distortion of history regarding Ukrainian participation in World War II and outlined the institute's plan to hold a terminology conference for international partners. He pointed out that in Vienna, Ukrainians are frequently referred to as 'Russian soldiers,' which is part of a broader issue of historical fact manipulation.
Alfiorov emphasized that such phrasing creates a skewed perception of the Ukrainian role in the war.
“When, for example, it is claimed that only the 'Russian' army fought in World War II, that is a distortion of reality,”he stated. According to the institute head, this results in 'our grandfathers and great-grandfathers still being seen by many as part of the 'Russian army,' while we find ourselves disconnected from the history of Rus'.'
Terminology Conference
The planned terminology conference aims to address these issues and find ways to improve international understanding of Ukrainian history. Representatives from various countries will participate, allowing for the raising of key questions related to the identity and historical memory of the Ukrainian people.
This conference could represent a significant step toward restoring historical justice and enhancing the global perception of Ukrainian identity. Given that historical memory and terminology profoundly shape national consciousness, events like this conference are essential for fostering a clearer recognition of Ukraine's role in history.
