Half-Price Train Fares for Students: But Not Every Carriage Qualifies.
Student Discounts on Railway Travel in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Students in Ukraine can now get a 50% discount on train tickets, though the offer is limited to specific carriage types. Currently, the reduced fare applies only to second-class sleeper cars (platzkart) and second-class seats on Intercity+ trains. This move comes amid growing demand for affordable transportation options among young people.
Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia), which introduced new trains in spring 2023, has extended its route from Kyiv to Yaremche, boosting domestic tourism and making travel more convenient for students. Thanks to these discounts, young travelers can save on transportation costs, a key factor when planning budget-friendly trips.
Buying Tickets and Refund Options
Tickets can be purchased through the official Ukrzaliznytsia app, the website booking.uz.gov.ua, as well as via Viber or Telegram chatbots and Privat24. Sales open 20 days before departure, allowing travelers to plan ahead. If a refund is needed, the money is returned to the buyer's bank card within 30 days.
These student discounts, though restricted to certain carriage types, open up new travel opportunities for young people, giving them more chances to explore Ukraine. It is worth noting, however, that the discounts do not yet extend to other carriage classes, which may limit students' choice of trains.
Introducing fare discounts for students is a significant step toward making transport more accessible for young people, who often operate on tight budgets. This could not only boost domestic tourism but also support the social mobility of students eager to visit different regions of Ukraine.
Still, the restriction on carriage types might dampen enthusiasm for travel if students are unable to choose more comfortable options.
