Washington classifies the Tren de Aragua group as a terrorist organization supported by the Maduro regime.

President Donald Trump confirmed that 11 people were killed in the attack.

“In the last few minutes, we struck a boat that was carrying a lot of drugs,” said Trump, making a statement from the Oval Office.

Trump also noted: “You will see this soon, what just happened, our great general and head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who was so incredible, including what happened in Iran, destroying potential nuclear capability. I think that within a month they would have had it if we hadn't done what we did.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio tweeted: “US military conducted a deadly strike… against a drug smuggling vessel that departed from Venezuela and was operated by a designated terrorist organization.”

An official defense representative confirmed that additional information about the “targeted strike” would be provided later.

Military Action Amidst Tension

This incident occurs against the backdrop of rising tensions between Caracas and Washington. Last week, the US president deployed additional troops to Venezuela due to the movement of 15,000 dictator's troops to the border with Colombia.

Trump accuses President Nicolas Maduro of “mass murder, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and acts of violence and terror across the United States and the Western Hemisphere.”

The White House has previously accused Tren de Aragua of “illegally penetrating US territory and conducting irregular warfare by carrying out hostile actions against the United States.”

Trump also invoked the Foreign Enemies Act against the Tren de Aragua group, aiming to expedite the deportation process.

The 1798 Act provides significant powers for identifying and removing undocumented immigrants.

Provisions of the Act can be implemented in the event of war between the US and another country or a threat of invasion.

“All Venezuelan citizens aged 14 and older are members of TdA and are on US territory, and are not native or lawful permanent residents of America, may be detained, restricted, ensured, and removed as Foreign Enemies,” Trump noted in the proclamation.

However, a judge quickly prohibited Trump from enforcing this law and ordered any flights with members of the group to be returned.

Tren de Aragua is a transnational criminal organization recognized by the US as a foreign terrorist organization. It has over 5,000 members and is considered a “high threat” by specialists from the Department of Homeland Security.

After the attack, Trump tweeted: “This morning, at my order, military forces struck recognized terrorists Tren de Aragua in the SOUTHCOM theater.

“TDA is a recognized foreign terrorist organization operating under the control of Nicolas Maduro and responsible for mass murder, drug trafficking, human trafficking, acts of violence, and terror,” Trump noted.

“The strike occurred while the terrorists were in international waters, transporting drugs illegally entering the US.

“As a result, 11 terrorists were eliminated. No American forces were harmed during this strike.

“Let this be a warning to anyone who is thinking about bringing drugs into the United States. Be careful!”
