Demands for accountability for war crimes

According to ТСН: Donald Trump's peace initiatives cannot cancel the prosecution of Vladimir Putin for war crimes committed by Russian forces.

In an interview with Politico, European Commissioner for Justice and Democracy Michael McGrath outlined a new 'red line' for a peace agreement.

'I don't think history will approve of any attempts to erase the traces of Russian crimes in Ukraine. They must be held accountable for these crimes, and this is the approach that the European Union will take in all these discussions,' he stated.

McGrath emphasized that if Russia escapes punishment for its actions, it could lead to new aggression and further invasions.

'I believe that this would be a historical mistake of colossal proportions,' he stressed.

The Ukrainian authorities reported that they have begun investigations into more than 178,000 alleged Russian crimes since the start of the war. In November, a UN commission found the Russian authorities guilty of crimes against humanity, including through drone attacks, as well as war crimes related to the forced displacement and deportation of civilians.

'We cannot dismiss the rights of the victims of Russian aggression and Russian crimes. Millions of lives have been taken or destroyed, people have been forcibly displaced, and we have enough evidence,' the European official highlighted.

At the same time, Donald Trump and his team have not yet shown significant interest in prosecuting Putin. In particular, the American peace plan involves a phased lifting of sanctions on Russia, although European leaders have expressed their opposition, stating that decisions will be made by themselves.

Meeting of US and Ukrainian Delegations

Recall that the meeting of the American and Ukrainian delegations has begun. Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov is heading the Ukrainian delegation instead of the former head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak.

The purpose of this meeting is to finalize the positions of the US and Ukraine regarding the draft peace agreement before representatives head to Moscow for negotiations with Putin.

The process of peace negotiations between the US and Ukraine exists against the backdrop of active discussions regarding Russia's accountability for war crimes. Importantly, the European Union's position remains clear: any compromises must not lead to the impunity of the aggressor. Observing these events, one can expect further escalation if peace initiatives do not balance the demands for justice.
