Sweden Sends Gripen Jets to Ukraine: Key Details on the New Fighter Aircraft.
Ukraine Set to Receive Gripen Fighter Jets from Sweden
According to UATV: Sweden is preparing to deliver multirole combat aircraft of the fourth generation to Ukraine, designated for interception, reconnaissance, and strike missions. The transfer of these Gripen jets is scheduled for May 30. Equipped with missiles that have a range of up to 200 kilometers, these aircraft are expected to significantly bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
While the Gripen is comparable to the F-16s previously supplied to Ukraine, its operational strengths are equally notable. 'When comparing the F-16 to the Gripen models being transferred to Ukraine, they are functionally similar,' stated Bohdan Dolintse. He further emphasized that the Gripen could neutralize missiles launched from Russian Tu-22, Tu-160, or Tu-95 bombers within Russian territory, a crucial factor for protecting Ukrainian airspace.
Cost and Armament of the Gripen
The operational cost of the Gripen ranges from $5,000 to $10,000 per flight hour. Its primary armament will be Meteor missiles, capable of reaching targets up to 200 kilometers away. Additionally, Ukraine will receive AWACS systems, which can monitor airspace up to a distance of 450 to 500 kilometers. These technologies will greatly enhance the Ukrainian military's effectiveness in aerial engagements.
The delivery of Gripen jets marks a significant step in supporting Ukraine's defense, especially amid the ongoing conflict. The integration of advanced systems like AWACS will also expand Ukrainian forces' ability to detect and counter airborne threats. This development underscores the strengthening international backing for Ukraine, which could shift the conflict's dynamics and influence strategic decisions on both sides.
