For the First Time, a Swedish Court Orders the Seizure of a Vessel Over Stolen Ukrainian Grain from Crimea.
Sweden Detains the CAFFA Vessel
According to UATV: A Swedish court has ordered the detention of the CAFFA, a ship suspected of illegally transporting Ukrainian goods from territories temporarily occupied by Russia. This marks the first instance where a Swedish court has granted a request from Ukraine’s prosecutor’s office for international legal assistance. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko, announced the vessel’s seizure on June 4, 2023, highlighting it as a major milestone in efforts to combat illicit trade.
Ukraine’s Prosecutorial Actions
According to authorities, the CAFFA—listed in international registries as Guinea False—had systematically violated regulations governing entry to and exit from Ukraine’s temporarily occupied areas. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine submitted a request for international legal aid to Sweden’s Ministry of Justice on March 12, 2026, initiating the legal process.
Ruslan Kravchenko stated: 'Today, the court issued a procedural ruling to seize the vessel, advancing the international legal procedure.'
This Swedish court decision could serve as a powerful precedent for deeper cooperation between Ukraine and its international allies in the fight against illegal trade.
Andriy Sybiha, a Ukrainian official, also weighed in on the ruling, saying:
'I welcome today’s decision by the Swedish court to seize the CAFFA, implicated in the theft of Ukrainian grain from the temporarily occupied territory.'He added: 'I am grateful to Sweden for its principled stance, strong legal cooperation, and unwavering support for Ukraine.'
The seizure underscores the critical role of international collaboration in addressing crimes involving Ukraine’s resources and sends a clear signal to other nations about the importance of backing Ukraine’s efforts against unlawful trade.
By detaining the CAFFA, the Swedish court has opened new avenues for strengthening global cooperation to prevent the illegal export of Ukrainian assets. This step also contributes to building a legal framework that can hold those responsible for violations of international law accountable. Ukraine continues to receive backing from international partners, which may help restore justice and protect its national interests.
