The USA and NATO are exploring a scenario without Ukraine's accession: what is known about the negotiations.
According to ТСН: Amid current peace talks between the USA and Ukraine, 'creative solutions' are being explored that may help avoid Kyiv's 'red lines', particularly regarding NATO membership.
According to CNN, participants in the negotiations considered a scenario in which Ukraine would effectively be barred from joining the Alliance due to agreements made between NATO member states and Moscow.
New Proposal
One of the key 'problematic demands' of the previous US peace initiative was that Ukraine needed to officially renounce its aspiration to join NATO, which contradicts its Constitution. However, the new scenario offers an alternative approach:
“No one can force Ukraine to officially, in a legal sense, renounce this aspiration”
However, if the USA reaches agreements with Russia on a bilateral basis or if Russia receives certain guarantees from NATO, Ukraine could be sidelined from decision-making. This would mean that its path to the Alliance would be de facto blocked without a legal renunciation from Kyiv.
Negotiations Ongoing
The exploration of such 'creative solutions' is taking place against the backdrop of American negotiator Witkoff's trip to Moscow for talks at the Kremlin.
CNN sources noted that a final decision on this 'extremely delicate compromise' has not yet been made and is likely to provoke protests in some NATO countries. The final decision must be made by the president of Ukraine.
It was previously reported that NATO's Secretary General noted that several countries are categorically against Ukraine's membership.
The situation surrounding Ukraine's potential accession to NATO remains complex and multifaceted. Lengthy negotiations between the USA, Ukraine, and Russia demonstrate that compromises are necessary, although they may provoke tension among Alliance members. For now, it is important to monitor developments, as their outcome will affect not only security in the region but also Ukraine's final status on the international stage.
