Biography of Petr Fiala

Date of Birth: 01.09.1964

Petr Fiala – Czech politician, political scientist, and lecturer, since 2014 chairman of the Civic Democratic Party. Since November 2021 – Prime Minister of the Czech Republic.

Place of Birth. Education. Born on September 1, 1964. In 1988 he graduated from the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University (renamed Masaryk University in 1990) with a major in Czech philology and art history. In 1989 he received a PhD in philosophy.

Career. He worked as a historian at the regional museum in Kroměříž and collaborated with opposition educational circles in the second half of the 80s. After the political changes, he worked for a time as a journalist and publisher but later returned to academic work.

Since 1990, he has been professionally associated with his alma mater, heading the Department of Political Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Since 2002, he has been a professor of political science, the first in the Czech Republic.

From 2004 to 2011 he was the rector of Masaryk University and then Prorector until 2012.

For two years he led the conference of Czech rectors.

Political Career. In 2011 he became an advisor on education issues.

From May 2012 to July 2013 – Minister of Education, Youth and Physical Education in the government of Petr Nečas.

In October 2013 he was elected to the House of Deputies of the Czech Parliament in early elections.

In November 2013 he joined the Civic Democratic Party (ODS). At the party congress on January 18, 2014, he was elected chairman of the ODS. At the party congresses held in January 2018 and January 2020, he was re-elected as chairman of the ODS.

From November 2017 to October 2021 – deputy chairman of the House of Deputies of the Czech Parliament.

After the victory in the parliamentary elections in October 2021, representatives of five opposition parties expressed their intention to form a government coalition, and Petr Fiala was proposed as a candidate for the position of Prime Minister. On November 28, President Miloš Zeman appointed Petr Fiala as the new Prime Minister and tasked him with forming a government..

Family. Married. Three children were born in the marriage.
