The President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel allowed 60 citizens of the country to join the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This was reported by the press secretary of the Czech president Filip Plata, reports Český rozhlas.
In total, over 180 Czechs have applied to Pavel with a request to allow them to join the Ukrainian army.
Currently, it is known that President Pavel allowed 60 citizens of the country to join the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Meanwhile, Plata says that it is actually unclear how many Czechs went to Ukraine for the war, as some did so without permission.
The laws of the Czech Republic prohibit citizens from participating in military or paramilitary formations abroad without the permission of the president of the country. Meanwhile, in March 2022, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, announced the absence of punishment for citizens who would go to fight in Ukraine.
Earlier, the Chief of General Staff of the Czech Republic reported that citizens are not willing to join the army.
The President of the Czech Republic called on Ukraine to be realistic about the prospects of returning occupied territories
The President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel stated that it is Time for Ukrainians and their supporters to face the truth.
As noted by the leader of the Czech Republic in an interview with The New York Times, in conditions where Russia-friendly populist leaders, such as the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban, undermine European unity regarding the war, and the fatigue from the 19-month conflict "is growing everywhere," Ukraine "must be realistic" about its prospects of returning territories occupied by Russia.
Later, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine rejected the notion that ending the war in Ukraine could imply retaining control over some Ukrainian territories under occupation.
By the way, the ambassador of Ukraine to the Czech Republic, Vasyl Zvarych, stated that Ukraine does not plan to forcibly return men of conscription age who are abroad. He emphasized that the defense of the homeland is the duty of every citizen, but the decision to return remains individual for each person.
