Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov has been the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia since March 9, 2004. He has held this position in the cabinets of Mikhail Fradkov (2004-2007), Viktor Zubkov (2007-2008), Vladimir Putin (2008-2012), two cabinets of Dmitry Medvedev (2012-2020), and in the cabinet of Mikhail Mishustin (2020-present).

Since 2022, following the comprehensive Russian invasion of Ukraine, he has been subject to personal sanctions from the European Union, the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan.

Place of Birth. Education. Born on March 21, 1950, in Moscow. In 1972, he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. He speaks English, French, and Sinhalese.

Career. He began his professional career in 1972 at the USSR embassy in Sri Lanka.

From 1976 to 1981, he was involved in management for international economic organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR.

From 1981 to 1988, he served as the First Secretary, Advisor, and Senior Advisor at the Permanent Mission of the USSR to the UN.

From 1988 to 1990, he was Deputy Head of the Management for International Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR.

From 1990 to 1992, he was Head of the Management for International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR.

In 1992, he became Director of the Department for International Organizations and Global Problems of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 1992 to 1994, he served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

From 1994 to 2004, he was the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN in New York.

Since March 9, 2004, he has been the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

He worked in the governments under the leadership of Mikhail Fradkov and Viktor Zubkov. Since May 2008 - in the government of former RF President Vladimir Putin.

Since January 11, 2010, he has been a member of the government commission for economic development and integration.

On May 21 2012, he was reassigned to the minister's post following the inauguration of President Vladimir Putin.

On May 18, 2018, he was again confirmed in the position of Foreign Minister.

On January 21, 2020, the new government of the Russian Federation was approved, in which Lavrov retained his position.

Since 2022, he has been under personal sanctions from the European Union, the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan after the comprehensive Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Awards. He holds the rank of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation.

Awarded the Order of Honor (1996), the Order 'For Service to the Fatherland' III (1998) and IV (2005) classes. He received the gratitude of the President of the Russian Federation (2005).

Family. The politician is married and has a daughter.

Hobbies. He enjoys rafting. He was one of the organizers and the first president (since 2006) of the Federation of Canoe Slalom of Russia. He enjoys playing football, and his favorite team is Spartak (Moscow).
