Taiwan restricts imports of Russian oil: in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
Taiwan restricts imports of Russian oil
According to inkorr.com: The Taiwan government has decided to reduce the import of Russian oil in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. According to Ukrinform, the Taiwanese government is urging local companies to cut purchases of Russian oil products.
Statement from the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs: 'The import of Russian petrochemical raw materials is currently not subject to the restrictions imposed by the Taiwan government.'
Although Taiwan was previously one of the largest buyers of Russian oil, state-owned enterprises in the country suspended the purchase of crude oil from Russia back in 2023. The Taipei Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its readiness to cooperate with other democratic countries in implementing anti-Russian sanctions and to introduce new restrictions on the import of Russian oil if necessary.
Taiwan and sanctions against Russia
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Taiwan strengthened controls on high-tech exports to Russia and added over 3,300 Russian companies to its 'blacklist'. The new restrictions on the import of Russian oil have become a logical continuation of cooperation with democratic partners.
The measures taken to restrict the import of Russian oil are a reaction to the aggression from Russia. This highlights Taiwan's intention to join the sanctions pressure on Russia imposed by other states and to support democratic values and an international coalition against aggression.
