Russian Gas Tanker Adrift Near EU Coast Sparks Fears of Environmental Disaster.
Growing Alarm Over Russian Tanker Threat
According to UATV: Italy and France have alerted the European Commission about a Russian liquefied natural gas tanker drifting in the Mediterranean Sea, warning that it poses a serious ecological risk. The vessel, located between Malta and Italy, carries 700 tons of assorted fuels alongside a large volume of natural gas.
This tanker belongs to Russia's so-called shadow fleet, which is used to circumvent international sanctions. Its precarious condition has raised alarms, as any incident could trigger a major environmental crisis. According to Reuters,
“the vessel’s unstable state, combined with the nature of its specialized cargo, presents an immediate and grave threat of a large-scale ecological disaster at the heart of the European Union’s maritime zone.”
UK and Allies Weigh Military Action Against Shadow Fleet
In response, the United Kingdom and its partners are considering military measures to counter Russia's shadow fleet. This step underscores the severity of the situation and the urgent need to prevent potential ecological catastrophes in the region.
The incident highlights escalating tensions in the Mediterranean, where environmental risks are becoming increasingly critical amid global sanctions on Russia. The European response reflects a push for proactive steps to safeguard maritime areas vital to both the regional economy and ecosystem.
