ISW Report Reveals Russian Offensive Slowed by 16-Fold Margin.
Analysis of Russia's Spring-Summer 2026 Offensive
According to Espreso.tv: A new report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) examines the outcomes of Russia's spring-summer offensive in 2026, highlighting a dramatic slowdown in territorial gains compared to the previous year, along with severe troop losses. In June 2026, Russian forces advanced just 30.42 square kilometers, averaging only 1.01 square kilometers per day. This stands in stark contrast to June 2025, when they captured 481.25 square kilometers at a daily rate of 16.04 square kilometers. The slowdown reflects mounting challenges for Moscow's military command.
Russia's offensive momentum began to wane in November 2025. Between January and June 2025, Russian troops seized 2,189.87 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory. However, over the same period in 2026, their gains plummeted to just 622.60 square kilometers. Most of the limited recent advances occurred near Kostiantynivka in Donetsk Oblast. These figures underscore a sharp reversal in Russia's ability to sustain large-scale territorial operations.
Moreover, June 2026 saw Russian forces suffer staggering losses, with 1,298 troops killed or wounded for every square kilometer captured. By comparison, total Russian casualties in June 2025 reached 32,680. According to British intelligence estimates, as of May 27, Russia's overall losses since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine had hit half a million personnel. These factors point to significant strains on Russian battlefield command and logistics.
Strategic Implications and Future Prospects
The deceleration of the Russian offensive and its heavy casualty rates suggest that Ukraine may be pursuing a strategy of attrition, focusing on exhausting enemy forces while holding defensive lines. This shift could indicate a changing balance of power along the front, with potential consequences for future military operations by both sides. Going forward, close monitoring of the situation will be essential, as these developments could substantially alter the trajectory of the war.
