Vacationers and rescuers joined efforts to save the boy

According to The Sun: A dramatic incident occurred on the Spanish Costa del Sol: a group of vacationers formed a human chain to save a six-year-old boy who was swept out to sea by dangerous underwater currents.

The child decided to enter the water at Peñón del Cura beach in Mijas, despite a ban, as a red flag had been raised.

Rescue operation

Four other boys who also violated the swimming ban managed to return to shore. However, the six-year-old boy got caught in strong waves that dragged him approximately 15 meters out to sea at 2:00 PM last Saturday.

Vacationers teamed up with lifeguards to rescue him. The video shows up to 20 adults and children linking arms in a chain, trying to pull the boy from the water.

Lifeguards had warned a group of five children about the dangers just a day earlier.

The coordinator of the Mijas Lifeguard Service, Gonzalo Botta Vecchia, noted that conditions had been dangerous since morning.

“An eastern wind was blowing strongly, and the water rose almost to the wall, with barely noticeable sand,”
- he recounted.

According to him, the red flag was raised at the beginning of the service due to dangerous conditions.

Consequences of the rescue operation

One brave man tried to swim to the boy but was also swept up by the current and needed lifeguards' assistance.

“The situation got out of control,”
- recalled the person in charge of the service.

After the rescue, the boy was given first aid on the beach. He had not swallowed water but was extremely exhausted.

The man who rescued the boy also received assistance due to exhaustion.

“After such situations, 90% of people realize the dangers of swimming under a red flag,”
- added Gonzalo.

Local authorities appealed to tourists, reminding them that ignoring red flags not only endangers lives but can also lead to fines of around 1,500 pounds.

Safety on the beaches of Costa del Sol should always be a priority, especially during the holiday season when many people visit this popular destination. This incident once again emphasizes the importance of adhering to lifeguards' instructions and being mindful of water conditions. We hope this situation teaches children and their parents to be more cautious during their beach outings.
