Golfer Ben Griffin wears sunglasses in the dark: the reason lies in a dangerous eye disease.
Unusual case at the Ryder Cup
According to The Sun: Ryder Cup star Ben Griffin decided not to take off his sunglasses, even when it was already dark. The reason turned out to be very serious.
The player from Team USA showcased an impressive game on Friday, but still couldn’t beat Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.
ReutersAs the sun began to set, the American was spotted in dark sunglasses, which sparked lively discussions among fans on social media. Many questioned whether this would hinder him during the game against Bryson DeChambeau.
“Ben Griffin take off those sunglasses if you don’t want to contribute the suns not even out anymore,”– wrote one user.
Another commentator asked:
“Who’s this Griffin bloke playing golf in sunglasses then?”
While this caused some complaints, SunSport learned that the 29-year-old player suffers from a serious eye condition that complicates his vision. Griffin wears glasses to protect himself from bright light, as without them he sees distracting black spots in his field of vision.
This is so serious that it hinders his ability to focus on targets on the field, and doctors have warned him about the risk of losing his sight.
“It’s interesting,”– he explained to Golf Digest in June 2025.
Griffin revealed that he has many 'floaters' in his eyes.
“But, yeah, I see floaters. I have really bad vision.”
The player, who is 1.85 meters tall, underwent treatment, including laser surgery, after being diagnosed with a retinal detachment. He began wearing glasses in 2024 when his eye problems started to interfere with his game.

Thanks to the glasses in the dark, it is easier for him to perceive the surrounding environment, which allowed him to showcase a commendable performance at the Ryder Cup in Bethpage Black, New York.
“So if it’s really bright out and I’m not wearing the sunglasses, I look into the clouds or whatever and I see black stuff everywhere.”
The glasses Griffin wears are made by the Asian company Uswing, specialized in color contrasts.
Global news about Ryder Cup
The 45th Ryder Cup will take place from September 26 to 28, and Team USA will try to bring the title back to their country. Scottie Scheffler and the American team will compete against Rory McIlroy’s team on the famous Bethpage Black course.
This situation highlights the importance of considering the needs of athletes, especially when it comes to their health. Griffin's concerns about his vision may prompt many to think about how player health care impacts their performance in important competitions.
