Young Men and Testosterone Use

According to Vox - Загальний: This article explores the growing trend of testosterone use among young men, its health implications—particularly for fertility—and the shifting ideals of masculinity shaped by online culture. In recent years, testosterone prescriptions have risen sharply, driven in part by evolving standards of male appearance and well-being.

One individual, Klavikular, has been taking testosterone since age 14. In Ukraine, prescriptions for this hormone have jumped 154% since 2020. The main reasons cited for using testosterone include:

  • improving physical appearance
  • boosting energy levels
  • enhancing bone and muscle health

However, about one-third of men prescribed testosterone do not meet the medical criteria for a deficiency, raising concerns among healthcare professionals.

Sperm counts can decline both with age and as a result of testosterone use. In a study of direct-to-consumer clinics, six out of seven offered testosterone to patients who were interested in having children. This raises critical questions about how testosterone use affects male fertility.

Justin Dubin noted: 'I think many men assume that taking testosterone won't affect their fertility.'

New Masculinity Ideals

Today, young men are actively seeking new models of masculinity, many of which are being forged in online spaces. These shifts go beyond physical traits to reshape perceptions of men's roles in society.

Felix van der Heijden summed up the situation: 'Everything is dead.'

As a result, the issue of testosterone use among young men is becoming increasingly urgent—tied not only to health but also to evolving social norms. This trend highlights the need for deeper research into testosterone's effects on young men's health and the broader meaning of masculinity in modern society. With the rise of non-medical testosterone use, it is essential to address the ethical and medical dimensions of this practice to safeguard the health and well-being of the younger generation.
