PDC is considering changes to the format of Premier League Darts: players will choose their opponents.
Interesting idea for Premier League Darts
According to The Sun: PDC's CEO, Matt Porter, shared positive thoughts on possible format changes for Premier League Darts during an interview with Online Darts.
GettyNew approach to matches
The host suggested changing the match rules in the eighth and sixteenth weeks, where pairs are formed by standings: the first plays the eighth, the second plays the seventh, and so on. The new format allows the team in first place to choose any opponent to play against.
These changes will be announced live on PDC's YouTube channel or through an informing partner.
Porter, smiling, commented:
“It would be great drama, wouldn’t it? Maybe…”
The host emphasized that this would create interesting situations where players explain their choices.
Porter added:
“And then it could all go wrong when he beats you 6-0 on Thursday?”
Idea for creating rivalries
He noted that from a storytelling perspective, it's truly an interesting concept, though he expressed doubt that players would agree to such a change.
The host cited an example of how Luke Littler could choose an opponent he has often beaten, such as Nathan Aspinall, even if his standing is lower than Stephen Bunting's.
Porter showed cautious openness to this idea and urged the hosts to ask players for their opinion when such an opportunity arises.
He concluded:
“Try to ask a player you think could be in the Premier League what they think about this idea, and I’ll look at the responses and then we’ll see where we go from there.”
Additionally, Porter commented on Premier League as a component of the “Triumvirate” of darts, noting the absurdity of this concept with his witty remarks.
Changes to the format of Premier League Darts promise diversity in the match schedule and the possibility of creating new rivalries. Internal discussions and players' opinions may significantly affect the realization of this idea. Whether dart players are ready to embrace this new approach—time will tell, but the intrigue around the tournament is growing. Read also
