Snooker player caused a scandal to the referee over refusal for a re-rack.
Conflict at the British Open
According to The Sun: During the snooker competition, an incident occurred between the players and the referee when one of the stars expressed dissatisfaction with the referee's unusual decision. The commentator on air could not contain his emotions:
“I can’t believe this.”
This resonant case occurred during the match between Barry Hawkins and Jak Jones at the British Open, which took place at the Cheltenham Centre. At that moment, Jones was leading 2-1 when the conflict arose.
The players tried to pot balls at the top of the table, but the situation was complicated by a blocked ball. They decided to ask for a re-rack to avoid a lengthy game.
However, referee Ben Williams refused to comply with their request, leading to an argument:
“It’s not a stalemate, gents, it’s not a stalemate.”
Hawkins responded by noting:
“It’s going to be a long frame if we keep knocking balls over there. What’s the point of playing on?”
Jones also entered the discussion:
“What, you think that’s not a stalemate?”
Williams tried to explain his position, arguing:
“It’s not a stalemate because you’re just playing safety shots. A stalemate is when you’re stuck in one position for a long time.”
This dialogue caused outrage in Hawkins, who muttered:
“We’re going to be here all night.”
Eventually, the referee agreed to the re-rack, but his decision shocked the ITV commentator:
“My mouth is as wide open as the middle pockets right now. I cannot believe he didn’t accede to the players’ request.”
The commentator continued:
“He said you can’t mutually agree on a re-rack. We see that scores of times over the course of a season — scores of times!”
Fans were not left aside and expressed their dissatisfaction on social media:
- “What was Ben Williams at there? Being a contrarian for no reason.”
- “What is Ben Williams on about? Course if both players agree it’s a re-rack.”
The incident at the British Open has become a vivid example of how important game rules can evoke emotional reactions among players and commentators. The conflict between Hawkins, Jones, and the referee showed how tense the atmosphere can be during competitions. Such situations can not only impact the course of the game but also become a topic of discussion among fans who actively follow the developments in the world of snooker.
