How compatible are you with your partner in bed - when it comes to sleeping?

According to The Sun: Take this Bed Chemistry Quiz to find out how you score as a couple.

A survey of 2000 adults found that a third of Britons are not 'sleep compatible' with their partner - due to snoring or duvet hogging - with one in five often using separate rooms.

As 30% are kept awake at night due to differing sleep patterns and 20% have to endure lying next to a bed linen thief or a constant twitcher.

Only 17% of adults say they 'never' lose sleep because of their partner.

But 65% of those who believe they are the problem in bed feel guilty about keeping their partner awake at night.

The research was commissioned by Dreams, which brought radio presenter and comedian Chris Stark to the streets to find out first-hand what couples think about their sleep compatibility - or lack thereof.

Stark said: “We all like to think we are a dream to share a bed with, but let’s be honest - most of us are probably a bit of a nightmare, from snoring, duvet hogging or taking up the whole bed… or like in my house, having to share my 4 am alarms.

“A third of us are actually 'sleep incompatible' - that’s millions of couples across the UK who are struggling to share a bed.

“The good news is that some simple changes to your sleep environment can make a big difference… so I’ve been exploring the highs and lows of ‘bed chemistry’ by talking to couples about their sleep problems.”

The research also showed that partners are not the only issue affecting sleep, as 23% of all respondents claim that the mattress they are currently sleeping on is only ‘okay’.

Of those not thrilled with their sleeping arrangements, 44% experience issues with back pain and 13% are driven mad by loud springs.

But the respondents have had their mattress for up to five years.

Almost half (47%) are also negatively affected by temperature when trying to get 40 winks.

While 36% struggle with noise from outside and 28% can’t find decent sleep because their pillow isn’t very comfortable.

A spokesperson for Dreams, which has a 'Sleepmatch' service to assess couples’ sleep preferences to help them find a mattress that works for both partners, added: “Sleep incompatibility can be a real challenge for couples.

Whether it’s differing mattress preferences, different temperature needs or a partner who tosses and turns, poor sleep affects not just sleep - it impacts mood, energy and overall wellbeing.

“The good news? The solution is easier than you think.

“The right mattress, pillow, and sleep environment can change your nights.

“We know it’s important to find a bed that loves you back to ensure the quality of sleep that every couple deserves.”

The 10 biggest things that make people 'sleep incompatible'
  • Snoring
  • Different sleep times
  • Constant twitching
  • Duvet hogging
  • Room temperature being warmer or cooler than the other likes
  • Taking up the whole space in bed
  • Using electronic devices in bed
  • Size of mattress e.g. not big enough to have personal space
  • Sleep apnea
  • Leaving the light on
The study conducted showed that about a third of Britons are unable to live with their partner in bed due to snoring or duvet hogging. Most couples also face challenges due to differing sleep schedules and discomfort with mattresses that can cause back pain. To improve sleep quality, it is enough to change the sleeping situation, as the right mattress and pillows can work wonders for shared nights.
