Leigh prepares a controversial boycott of the semi-final: what is the reason for the conflict.
Threat of withdrawal from the semi-final
According to The Sun: The Leigh Leopards team may withdraw from participating in the Super League semi-final match taking place on Friday due to disputes over ticketing.
The football club is set to play against Wigan Warriors just nine miles from their hometown, where a chance to reach the final is at stake.
PAHowever, club owner Derek Beaumont noted that he is not interested in playing, despite the possibility of receiving up to 5,400 tickets.
The town of Leigh has a population of 46,000, and more than 16,000 tickets have already been sold.
If a compromise cannot be reached, the match will not take place.
“At 10:37 PM on Tuesday, our club received a written notice from Derek Beaumont of Leigh Leopards stating that they do not intend to fulfill their obligations regarding the semi-final scheduled for Friday.”
“We can confirm that Leigh Leopards received an option for 4,600 unreserved seats or 5,400 reserved seats in the North Stand.”
“This number was determined by an independent Safety Assembly and our Stadium Safety Specialist, after consultations with the police.”
“It is important to note that the offer was significantly higher than the minimum of 10 percent required for away fans – in fact, it was almost twice as much.”
“While we regret that Leigh Leopards find this agreement unacceptable, our club is legally and professionally obligated to adhere to the guidance of our Stadium Safety Specialist and the terms of our Safety Certificate.”
“The safety and wellbeing of all fans must come first. This is non-negotiable and forms the basis of every decision we make.”
“We continue to prepare for the semi-final on Friday and will provide further information as the situation develops.”
SunSport reached out to Derek Beaumont for comment.
The situation surrounding the match cancellation could impact fans of both teams, as many are counting on the opportunity to attend the important game. Further discussions with the organizers may help find a resolution to this conflict, however, no official statements have been made so far. Fans are hoping for a positive resolution to the matter, as their support for the team in the semi-final is of immense importance.
