Ukraine's commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported that the forces have recaptured 60 square miles of territory, destroying many Russian transport vehicles during the offensive near Pokrovsk.
General Syrskyi noted that his troops advanced further over the weekend following President Zelensky's announcement of a counteroffensive on Friday.
“In the last 24 hours, the enemy has lost 65 soldiers, including 43 dead, as well as 11 vehicles,” he added.
Among the destroyed Russian vehicles were 12 tanks and 38 armored vehicles.
Moreover, Russia has reportedly lost about 2,700 soldiers during the counteroffensive, of whom half were killed and over 100 were captured.
Recognition of war crimes
Last month, Ukrainian forces stated that they killed three Russian soldiers involved in the massacre in Bucha during a series of retaliatory strikes.
This occurred during the celebrations for Ukraine's independence day, when several drone strikes were carried out on critical infrastructure in Russia.
“Three Russian soldiers, dubbed 'The Butchers of Bucha', were killed in targeted bombings in the Luhansk region.”
They were stationed in the Luhansk region and worked as part of a mobile air defense unit to protect the Russian military base during maintenance.
War crimes in Bucha
Bucha is a city near Kyiv where Russian troops have been accused of committing horrific war crimes while attempting to storm the Ukrainian capital in 2022.
Here, dozens of Ukrainians were victims of shootings, torture, mutilation, and sexual violence used as a weapon of war.
After the withdrawal of Russian troops, mass graves were discovered in Bucha, where dozens of corpses were hastily buried by the occupying forces.
