Sheffield Wednesday faces 15-point deduction: the reason for the scandal.
Penalty points for Sheffield Wednesday
According to The Sun: The Sheffield Wednesday football club may face a penalty of a FIFTY-POINT deduction due to the late payment of salaries to its players.
The club owner, Devan Chan-Shiri, has failed to pay salaries in five of the last seven months.
The club has violated EFL financial rules RexThe EFL will accuse the club of violating financial rules, and the matter will be referred to an independent disciplinary commission.
According to regulations, the club could lose three points for each late payment — this could add up to 15 points. However, the commission will also consider mitigating circumstances and precedents from punishments faced by other clubs.
For example, Reading club in 2023 failed to pay player salaries and received a one-point penalty, while Wigan was penalized eight points in the same season.
It is currently difficult to predict what specific punishment awaits Sheffield Wednesday. However, according to SunSport, it is likely to be within the indicated range.
Given the prolonged violations by the club, the commission might take stricter measures.
This is yet another blow for Wednesday fans and the team currently led by Henrik Pedersen.
On Tuesday, the club played a 2-2 draw with Birmingham, which allowed them to rise from the third-bottom position in the Championship after eight matches.
Although salaries were supposed to be paid on September 29, the club can still make payments until midnight on the last day of the month.
Young players and administrative staff received their salaries, but some senior players did not, which violates EFL rules.
Sheffield Wednesday already has FIVE transfer embargos, limiting the ability to register new players until all unpaid payments are settled.
Moreover, the club cannot sign free agents if it has more than 16 players with three or more league starts at the current level. Currently, the team already has 16 such players, complicating new arrivals.
Angry fans are planning another protest before the home match against Coventry this Saturday.

The impact on championship results could become yet another challenge for a club that is already struggling with performance. Fans hope that the payment issues will be resolved soon, as supporting the team in this difficult time is critically important.
