Thousands March in Istanbul Against NATO Summit: Here’s What They’re Demanding.
Istanbul Protest Targets NATO Summit
According to Espreso.tv: A massive protest march unfolded in Istanbul, drawing thousands of participants—mostly from leftist movements—who voiced their opposition to the NATO summit. Demonstrators called for the United States to leave Turkey, denouncing the alliance as a 'slaughter machine built to preserve global dominance.'
One attendee, Ali Gültekin, stated:
“We are here to protest the NATO summit being held in Ankara, which costs millions of dollars.”
The Istanbul protest ended without any arrests—a notable outcome compared to events in Ankara, where police broke up a banned demonstration and detained 20 people on July 7. Meanwhile, in the Turkish capital, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the NATO Defense Industry Forum, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in this sector.
Turkey’s Political Landscape
The Istanbul protests highlight growing frustration among segments of Turkish society over the country’s foreign policy and its role in NATO. This surge in activism may signal rising political tensions in Turkey amid global developments, including the war in Ukraine and shifts in the international power balance.
At the same time, the Ukrainian president’s participation in the forum underscores Ukraine’s support for NATO and its push to strengthen defense ties in the face of contemporary challenges.
