She was disappointed and crying after the race
After touching the last hurdle, the Welshwoman lost her balance and fell at high speed in the National Stadium in Tokyo.
In the fall on lane four, she hit her head hard on the ground but was still able to fly over the finish line.
Powell, who had set a personal record of 12.94 seconds on this track, received an official time of 14.70 seconds, which was the worst result among 23 participants.
Broadcast cameras captured her leaving the stadium in tears, while her coach and colleagues Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Jade O’Dowda comforted her.
According to the BBC, she was offered medical assistance, but Powell chose to continue participating in the seven events.
It is unclear whether concussion tests were conducted or medical protocols were followed.
However, when she participated in the next event – the high jump – she managed to set a personal record by clearing a height of 1.80 meters.
Experts' Opinions
Jenny Meadows, former 800-meter runner and current coach of Keely Hodgkinson, noted: “It was hard to watch. She is really an excellent hurdler.”

“She fell at the British hurdles championship and performed well. It only happened at the last hurdle.”
“That’s the image we don’t want to see. So unfortunate.”
“I think she achieved a lot by crossing that line and still getting a time, even if it wasn’t the time she wanted, but a result that allowed her to continue competing in these events.”
“It’s very important to start the first event well and to run a clean race. Those are really tough images.”
Jessica Ennis-Hill, Olympic champion of 2012 in London, supported this opinion regarding the unpleasant appearance of the situation on the television screen.
“Abigail probably had high expectations.”
“You can see how the girls are comforting and supporting her.”
“Does she decide to continue? She also hit her head hard. I hope her health was checked.”
This incident at the Olympics has again highlighted the importance of medical protocols for athletes, especially after a fall in such intense competitions like the heptathlon. Abigail Powell showed remarkable mental strength, allowing her to not only cope with the injury but also set a new personal record in the high jump. One can only hope that the necessary medical help is offered to her in time to avoid future issues.
