Trump on Ukraine's NATO Membership: Expressed Understanding Before Zelensky's Arrival.
According to ТСН: U.S. President Donald Trump has once again expressed his position on Ukraine's NATO membership, noting that there was previously an 'understanding' that Kyiv would not join the Alliance.
In his interview with Politico, Trump explained that this 'understanding' emerged 'long before Putin', but changed after Volodymyr Zelensky took power.
“There was an understanding that Ukraine would not join NATO. To be fair, this was long before Putin,” Trump said.
He noted that Ukraine began to 'insist' on membership only after the leadership changed. Trump links this situation to the meeting between Zelensky and Putin.
“And now they started insisting, you know, when Zelensky first came and first met with Putin, he said: 'I want two things. I want the return of Crimea, and we will be NATO members',” Trump recounts.
Trump also added that Zelensky's statement was 'not very pleasant'.
In addition, the U.S. president made several unusual comments regarding geography and the status of Crimea, which surprised experts.
These statements from Trump underline the complexity of the current situation in Ukraine and the attitude toward its Euro-Atlantic aspirations. The interview adds new dimensions to understanding the positions of key players in international relations, which could influence Ukraine's future diplomatic efforts.
