Trump appointed Steven Witkoff as a representative in the 'peace process' with Russia and Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump designated Steven Witkoff as a representative in the 'peace process' between Russia and Ukraine. This was reported by The New York Times.
Initially, officially, Trump appointed Keith Kellogg to the role of special representative of the U.S. President for Ukraine and Russia. However, the publication indicates that Witkoff received 'a certain role in the peace process.'
According to sources, a few weeks ago, Trump allowed Witkoff to expand his functions beyond the Middle East, with the aim of opening a negotiating channel with the Russians.
The U.S. President personally trusts Witkoff, with whom he has been friends since the 1980s. Trump noted his negotiation skills, which he believes will help end the war in Ukraine. Witkoff's powers regarding the administration's mandate remain unknown.
It should also be noted that on February 11, Steve Witkoff, the U.S. President's special representative for the Middle East, visited Russia to secure the release of American teacher Mark Vogel, who was in a Russian prison. According to the publication, Witkoff held direct talks with officials linked to Putin before his visit to Moscow.
According to sources of the newspaper, Witkoff also discussed Ukraine with contacts in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The Gulf countries have long sought to play a mediating role in ending the conflict.
The Trump administration is also planning to develop a new military aid plan for Ukraine.
