Ukraine, US, and Russia to Hold Talks on Donbas in Abu Dhabi.
Abu Dhabi to Host Three-Way Talks
According to TSN.ua: High-level talks between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia are scheduled for January 23-24 in Abu Dhabi, with the conflict in Ukraine's Donbas region as the central focus. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized the importance of this topic, stating that Kyiv anticipates positive outcomes from Washington's involvement. These discussions represent a rare diplomatic engagement between the parties since the conflict began in 2014.
In preparation for the talks, President Zelenskyy met with U.S. President Donald Trump on January 22, where discussions also covered air defense systems. The Russian delegation at the negotiations will be led by Igor Kostyukov, head of the GRU military intelligence agency. The context of the talks is further defined by a statement from Yuri Ushakov, who stressed that without resolving territorial issues, there is no prospect for a long-term settlement in Ukraine.
Significance of the Negotiations
This three-way dialogue could prove to be a pivotal moment in shaping the future strategy for resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The meeting's outcomes may significantly impact the level of international support for Ukraine, particularly from the United States, as well as influence Russia's position regarding its actions in Donbas. The importance of these negotiations underscores the necessity of a multi-stage approach to achieving a sustainable peace process and stability in the region.
