In unrecognized Transnistria, the Ukrainian flag was hoisted.

In Bender, a Moldovan city effectively controlled by the unrecognized state of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, the Ukrainian community unfurled the blue and yellow flag. The photographs were published by the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Moldova.

The flag was unfurled on the territory of the Bender Fortress.

«Today, the blue and yellow flag is waving at the Bender Fortress in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova!» - the message said.

Thus, the community celebrated the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine.

History of the Bender Fortress

The strategic significance of the Bender Fortress for Ukrainian historiography lies in the fact that in 1709, after the Battle of Poltava, Hetman Ivan Mazepa retreated here, where he retired. The following year, in 1710, in the city of Bender, Pylyp Orlyk and the Cossacks entered into an agreement defining the rights and duties of the Hetman, known to us as the Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk, or the Bender Constitution.

On April 9, 2010, a monument to the Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk was opened on the territory of the fortress, erected in honor of its 300th anniversary.

It should be reminded that every year on August 23, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the State Flag. This holiday was established by a decree of the President of Ukraine on August 23, 2004, «in honor of the centuries-old history of Ukrainian state formation, the state symbols of independent Ukraine, and to foster respect among citizens for the state symbols of Ukraine».

Today, during the celebrations on the occasion of the Day of the State Flag, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukrainians will defend the right to justice and freedom. The head of state emphasized that Ukraine will protect its independence and rebuild the country.

«In this war, we are, above all, defending for Ukraine, for Ukrainians, precisely the right to justice, to our own, to freedom, to national dignity, to our own security, to our own state, and that the criminals who came to destroy Ukraine and brought ruins to our home will definitely have ruins in their own homes,» Zelensky said.

Ministers Rustem Umyrov, Denys Shmyhal, and the head of the President's Office Andriy Yermak were present at the State Flag raising ceremony.
