Ukraine considers demilitarized zones: what compromise is possible in occupied territories.
According to ТСН: Ukraine will not consider legal recognition of occupied territories as part of Russia, but is examining the possibility of creating demilitarized zones with international oversight as a compromise.
This was stated by MP Fedor Venislavsky in an interview with OBOZ.UA.
Ukraine's position: no de jure concessions
Venislavsky emphasized that any peace plan that involves transferring territories under the control of Russia is unacceptable.
"For Ukraine, recognition of de jure control or de jure transfer of our territories under the control of the Russian Federation is definitely unacceptable. De facto, we already recognize them as temporarily occupied... But there will be no concessions, recognition that Crimea is Russian or that the occupied areas of Luhansk and Donetsk regions are Russian — this will not happen under any circumstances," the MP stated.
In his opinion, one option for resolving this situation could be the creation of special territories under international supervision. This would allow for investment attraction and start reconstruction without a formal renunciation of sovereignty.
"A free economic zone could be created under the control of international management entities. This is an acceptable option that does not violate the Constitution of Ukraine. But actions must be symmetrical: if we demilitarize a certain area, then the Russians must also confirm that there can be no armed formations of the Russian Federation there," Venislavsky explained.
The principle of symmetry in negotiations
The MP noted that Ukraine should not lead negotiations into another 'dead end' by demanding the impossible. However, in his opinion, steps towards peace should be proportional from both sides.
"I think we can talk about symmetrical steps. That is, if we have to withdraw troops from a certain area, then they should also withdraw their troops in the opposite direction. This could be a compromise option. And it is necessary that our partners put more systematic pressure on the Putin regime in this regard," Venislavsky summarized.
It was previously reported that Trump's peace agreement with Zelensky faced difficulties due to Russia's position, complex territorial issues, and internal political risks in the USA.
Additionally, Trump's rhetoric during the meeting with Zelensky plays into Moscow's hands.
It is important to note that Ukraine's position remains unchanged: no recognition of the annexation of Crimea and other territories, as well as the desire to create working mechanisms for conflict resolution without loss of sovereignty. This indicates the resilience of the state in the face of modern geopolitical challenges and attempts to set the negotiation process on mutually acceptable terms.
