SBU Officials Busted in $322,000 Bribery Scheme Targeting Businesses.
Corruption Scheme Uncovered Inside Ukraine's Security Service
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian law enforcement has exposed a corrupt operation where officials from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) allegedly pressured companies for bribes. Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko confirmed that suspects have been formally charged and could face up to 12 years in prison. This case highlights ongoing anti-corruption efforts within Ukraine's state institutions.
Details of the Case
Charges have been brought against:
- the deputy head of the SBU's Main Directorate in Kyiv and Kyiv region,
- the deputy head of the SBU Directorate in Rivne region,
- a civilian intermediary.
Investigators determined that these officials demanded illicit payments on an especially large scale. The price for 'undisturbed operations' for businesses was set at $600,000.
According to the evidence, an initial installment of $50,000 was handed over on March 6, followed by a second payment of $250,000 on March 16. Additionally, the deputy head of the SBU Directorate in Rivne region personally accepted a bribe exceeding $22,000. In total, authorities have documented over $322,000 in illicit payments. All three suspects are now in custody.
The corruption scandal within the SBU has sparked widespread public and law enforcement outrage, serving as a stark example of systemic issues in Ukraine's fight against corruption. Investigators are continuing their work to uncover all details and bring every individual involved to justice.
This incident underscores the persistent challenges in combating corruption in Ukraine, particularly within state agencies. Exposing such a high-level scheme inside the Security Service signals the urgent need for further reforms and tighter oversight of law enforcement bodies.
Both the public and experts are now calling for transparent investigation results and potential legislative changes to prevent similar abuses in the future.
