Ukraine Seeks Faster Patriot Missile Deliveries After Russia's Record Ballistic Barrage in January 2023.
The Ballistic Missile Threat to Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: In January 2023, Russian forces launched a record 91 ballistic missiles at Ukraine, marking the highest monthly total since the full-scale invasion began. Facing this escalating threat to critical infrastructure, Ukraine's Ministry of Defense is urgently working to expedite the delivery of missiles for its Patriot air defense systems to bolster the nation's defenses.
During a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (the 'Ramstein format'), an agreement was reached for the urgent supply of missiles for MIM-104 Patriot systems. Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, stressed the critical importance of PAC-3 missiles for countering Russian ballistic threats. He emphasized:
"We desperately need the means to intercept ballistic missiles, as Russia aims to destroy our critical infrastructure this winter." - Mykhailo Fedorov
Expanding Patriot Air Defense Capabilities
Also in January 2023, Ukraine received two additional Patriot launcher systems, enhancing its capacity to defend against missile attacks. The Patriot system is designed to fire several types of interceptor missiles, including:
- PAC-2
- PAC-3 CRI
- PAC-3 MSE
These advanced air defense systems are vital for protecting Ukraine's cities and infrastructure from relentless Russian aggression.
The surge in Russian ballistic missile strikes underscores the urgent need to strengthen Ukraine's defensive capabilities, particularly during the winter when attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure intensify. The accelerated delivery of new Patriot missiles and launchers represents a crucial step in reinforcing air defenses, protecting civilian areas, and maintaining national stability amid the ongoing war. The Patriot system is considered one of the world's most capable air defense platforms, making it a high-priority asset for Ukraine.
