Texas Reports New Case of Flesh-Eating Parasite Infection

According to Vox - Загальний: A 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas, has tested positive for the New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite. This marks the first confirmed case since the early 1980s, raising serious concerns about the parasite’s potential spread across the United States. The parasite was first detected in the country in 2023, and as of now, no additional infections have been confirmed in Texas.

Response Measures Following Parasite Detection

In response, authorities have established a 12-mile surveillance zone around the infection site in Zavala County. Since July 2025, the state has deployed fly traps to monitor the situation. According to Phillip Kaufman, 'there are adult flies in the area,' highlighting the risk of further spread.

A representative from the Texas Animal Health Commission stated, 'we do not suspect that any animals have been moved,' which could reduce the likelihood of the infection spreading further. However, an outbreak could cause economic losses of up to $1.8 billion per year. The situation has also paralyzed 15,000 USDA employees, including veterinarians and animal health specialists.

Production of sterile flies in Panama is running at about 100 million per week, which could play a key role in controlling the New World screwworm’s spread. Authorities and relevant organizations continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent potential disease outbreaks.

The detection of the New World screwworm in the U.S. has alarmed agronomists and veterinarians, as this parasite could have severe consequences for agriculture and livestock. Government agencies and organizations are taking steps to manage the situation and prevent further spread, which could otherwise lead to significant economic losses. The situation demands careful monitoring and swift action to protect animals and avert epidemics.
