World's Largest Seed Bank Opens in the UK, Storing 6.6 Tons at -20°C.
Millennium Seed Bank
According to TSN.ua: The world's largest seed bank, the Millennium Seed Bank, has opened at the Wakehurst site of Kew Gardens in the United Kingdom. This unique facility preserves over 6.6 tonnes of plant seeds, including species that are now extinct in the wild. All seed samples are stored at a constant -20°C to ensure their long-term conservation. Such seed banks are a critical global response to the accelerating loss of plant biodiversity.
As the largest facility of its kind, the Millennium Seed Bank plays a vital role in safeguarding genetic diversity. There are currently more than 1,700 similar repositories worldwide. The bank's security system is automatically triggered if anyone remains in the sealed vault for longer than ten minutes, highlighting the immense value placed on protecting these irreplaceable samples.
Global Efforts to Preserve Plant Diversity
The vault contains many millions of seed samples, though the precise total is not currently known. In addition, the Global Seed Vault on Norway's Svalbard archipelago also stores millions of seed samples, demonstrating the scale of international efforts to preserve the planet's botanical heritage.
According to Noa Leach, the Millennium Seed Bank 'holds over 6.6 tonnes of seeds in its vaults'.
This project underscores a global commitment to conserving natural resources for future generations. The opening of the Millennium Seed Bank represents a significant step in combating plant extinction and preserving global biodiversity. In the face of climate change and widespread habitat loss, initiatives like this are becoming increasingly essential for ecosystem survival.
Seed preservation not only helps save plant species but also underpins future food security, as plants form the foundation of most food chains and agricultural systems.
