UEFA and the Super League in Talks: Champions League Awaits Changes.
According to The Sun: According to new data, UEFA is negotiating with the Super League regarding a possible merger and the creation of a new format for the Champions League.
The Super League proposal sparked significant outrage among fans after 12 major clubs announced their intention to join in April 2021.
GettyThe Champions League may undergo significant changes in 2027.
Although most clubs have withdrawn from the project, the Super League continues to exist, and currently, Real Madrid remains the only member.
The world is closely watching the new negotiations between UEFA and the Super League ahead of 2027, when the television rights for the current Champions League expire.
Possible Format Changes
These circumstances open up opportunities for reviewing the format, combining the existing system with elements of the Super League.
Journalist Arancha Rodriguez noted that the new format would include a group stage and playoffs.
Perhaps 36 teams will be divided into two groups:
- First group – 18 best clubs in Europe according to the UEFA ranking.
- Second group – another 18 teams that will play eight matches exclusively with teams from their group.
The qualification process will remain at the same level, considering the results of teams in national leagues and their coefficient.
Eight teams from the first group will automatically advance to the Round of 16.
New Broadcasting Management
Additionally, UEFA plans to launch a 'streaming platform,' allowing the avoidance of selling television rights to third-party broadcasters.
This could also reduce costs for viewing matches, and some broadcasts may become free, as UEFA will earn through advertising.
UEFA and Super League Merger
Proposed Format:
- The tournament retains the title of Champions League, UEFA remains responsible.
- The group stage and playoff stage are preserved.
- 36 teams will be divided into two groups (18 each) based on UEFA rankings (Top 18 and Second 18).
- Each team will play eight matches exclusively against other teams in their group.
- Qualification based on results in national championships and league coefficients.
- Eight teams from the first group will automatically advance to the Round of 16.
- The qualification process for other teams to the Round of 32 remains under discussion.
Broadcasting Changes (“Netflix-style”):
- The plan involves launching UEFA’s own streaming platform instead of selling television rights to third-party broadcasters.
- The goal is to ensure 'product accessibility.'
- Research shows this could lead to lower prices or even free broadcasts of certain games with UEFA’s revenue coming from advertising.
According to information, the goal is to make the product more accessible to viewers.
The proposal suggests that by eliminating intermediaries, prices could decrease, and some matches could become FREE, while UEFA would earn revenue from advertising.
