Hungarian Foreign Minister Visits Georgia

According to TSN.ua: During a visit to Tbilisi, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that the European Union is mistaken in believing Georgia should be kept at a distance regarding its potential accession to the bloc. He met with his Georgian counterpart, Maka Botchorishvili, in the Georgian capital, where they discussed the country's European integration path.

Szijjártó emphasized that holding EU membership negotiations with Tbilisi is far more beneficial than similar talks with Ukraine. He argued that

"the European Union is making a huge mistake when it believes that Georgia should be kept at a distance on the issue of accession"
— Péter Szijjártó. According to him, Georgia would strengthen the European Union, while Ukraine's accession could weaken it, posing a threat to the EU through substandard grain and other products.

Sanctions and European Integration

The situation in Georgia is complicated by potential EU sanctions over its alleged assistance to Russia. In this context, the EU has proposed including ports that service Russian oil supplies on its sanctions list. These issues remain pertinent as Georgia continues on its path toward European integration.

The Hungarian minister's remarks highlight the importance he places on Georgia for the stability of the European Union, particularly amid current geopolitical challenges. Given the rising tensions between the West and Russia, Georgia could play a key role in strengthening European security and energy independence. However, the question of sanctions and their impact on Georgia's relations with the EU remains crucial for the future of its integration process. Hungary's stance often diverges from the broader EU consensus, particularly regarding relations with Russia and its neighbors.
