Ukraine must be capable of striking airfields on Russian territory - Borrell.
The European External Action Service has published a blog by EU High Representative Josep Borrell, in which he claims that Ukraine needs the capability to attack airfields and launch sites on Russian territory. Currently, Ukraine is subjected to devastating missile and drone attacks from deep within Russia, causing damage to civilian infrastructure and resulting in civilian casualties.
Josep Borrell emphasizes that Ukraine has the right to self-defense. President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Ukrainians want to end the war, but not at the cost of their own sovereignty. He spoke about constant attacks on hospitals, schools, and homes, which take the lives of ordinary Ukrainian citizens. Ukrainian children are forced to study in basements and metro stations to protect themselves from missiles and drones supplied by Russia from North Korea and Iran.
Borrell stated that EU countries have committed to helping Ukraine in self-defense, including the possibility of attacking key Russian military targets involved in the war. However, the position of EU member states on this issue is divided.
The EU's position on this issue is complicated by the escalation of the Russian bombing campaign against civilian targets. Borrell claims that such a policy costs Ukrainian lives and undermines the reliability of support for Ukraine.
President Zelensky discussed the issue of permission to use provided weapons against Russian military targets with the leaders of the US and the UK during his participation in the "Ambrosetti" forum. Discussions will continue at the UN General Assembly in New York.
