Zelenskyy Outlines 2027 Target for Ukraine's EU Membership

EU Membership as a Security Guarantee for Ukraine

According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that his country's accession to the European Union is a crucial element of its future security guarantees. He noted that Ukraine could be technically ready to join the EU by 2027, though he expects Russia will attempt to block the process. This push for membership is a central pillar of Ukraine's long-term strategy to anchor itself firmly within European political and economic structures.

Speaking to journalists on January 30, 2023, Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukraine received official EU candidate status in June 2022. Formal accession negotiations are scheduled to commence in June 2024. The President emphasized that, technically, Ukraine will be prepared for membership by 2027, and he proposed that this be solidified with a target for Ukraine to become an EU member by January 1, 2027.

Ukraine's Preparedness for European Integration

Zelenskyy further indicated that by the end of 2026, Ukraine will be ready across all required policy areas, or clusters.

"In my view, we and Europe already share an understanding that the European Union represents a security guarantee for Ukraine and for all of Europe," the President said.
He stressed that Ukraine's geopolitical orientation is tied to Europe, and its economic future is linked to the EU. However, he also warned that
"Russia will block our accession to the European Union in the future."

President Zelenskyy's remarks underscore the strategic importance of European integration for Ukraine, particularly amid the ongoing security challenges it faces. EU membership is viewed not merely as an economic goal but as a vital security shield to help counter external threats. The planned 2024 accession talks and the potential 2027 entry date signal an acceleration of Euro-integration processes that could significantly reshape the regional dynamic.
