Ukraine to Compete in 2026 Paralympics Despite Russian and Belarusian Flags.
Statement from the President of Ukraine's National Paralympic Committee
According to UATV: Valeriy Sushkevych, President of Ukraine's National Paralympic Committee, has confirmed the country will not boycott the 2026 Paralympic Games, even though Russian and Belarusian athletes will be permitted to compete under their national flags. Sushkevych expressed his profound outrage at this decision, stating he is 'extremely, extremely angry and outraged that six Russian athletes have been allowed to perform under their flag.' This stance comes amid ongoing international debate over the participation of these nations in global sport.
Ukraine's Rationale for Participation
He emphasized that a boycott would effectively hand a victory to Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukrainian Paralympians and Ukraine itself.
"If we do not go, it will mean allowing Putin to win over Ukrainian Paralympians, over Ukraine, by excluding us from the Games,"Sushkevych added. These comments outline the Ukrainian position ahead of the upcoming competition.
Sushkevych's declaration underscores Ukraine's determination to remain part of international sporting events, navigating significant political and ethical challenges. The decision also highlights the role of sport as a platform for demonstrating national resilience and identity. According to Sushkevych, Ukrainian Paralympians intend to show they will not yield to pressure and will continue to fight for their place on the world stage.
