Why the Ukrainian economy will not reach the level of 2021 again.
The economic challenges of Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Economist Oleksiy Kushch sees no possibility for Ukraine to return to the economic data of 2021. The reason for this is immense challenges and a profound demographic crisis. According to his assessment, the population of Ukraine after the war will be around 25 million people. In this new reality, society will be comprised as follows:
- 10 million people will be pensioners,
- 5 million will be children,
- 2 to 3 million will be people with disabilities and war veterans,
- 7 to 8 million will belong to the working-age population.
Oleksiy Kushch emphasized that 'we have no chance of restoring the parametric data of 2021'.
These statements underline the severity of the demographic changes triggered by the war in Ukraine. Kushch also pointed out that 'the pyramid is turning upside down' – a reference to the growing share of the non-working population in the total population of the country. This development poses an enormous test for social systems.
Prospects for reconstruction
Against this background, the economic prospects of Ukraine face tremendous hurdles. In light of the changes in population structure, the country is in a situation where a return to the economic level of 2021 seems practically impossible.
The economist's forecasts make it clear that strategies for reconstruction need to be rethought and adapted to the new demographic realities. Ukraine will likely need to focus on the development of innovative sectors, support for the working-age population, and social security for vulnerable groups. Among the ongoing challenges, international assistance is also a crucial factor in advancing the reconstruction of the country.
