Ukraine Forges New Defense Partnerships in the Middle East
According to UATV: On March 30, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a major defense initiative involving Middle Eastern nations. The core objective is to train allied forces in safeguarding civilian infrastructure. As part of this effort, Ukraine has entered into ten-year defense agreements with both Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Zelensky stressed the significance of sharing expertise and experience in protecting civilian populations.
“We have taken a very important step. We shared our knowledge on how to protect people and civilian infrastructure,” the president stated.The partnership also covers the export of maritime drones and electronic warfare systems, designed to bolster the defensive capabilities of partners in the region.
Outlook and Strategic Significance
The Ukrainian leader also highlighted the potential for new export opportunities, noting:
“This is also about opening up exports, by the way, looking ahead.”He emphasized the importance of backing the private sector and the country's defenders, remarking that “this supports both our private sector and our warriors.” This initiative reflects Ukraine’s drive to strengthen international ties and intensify defense cooperation with key regional allies.
