Ukraine tops Europe in road fatalities: lawmakers propose penalty points to curb deaths.
Why Ukraine leads Europe in deadly road accidents
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine now has the highest road death rate in Europe, a grim distinction that lawmaker Volodymyr Kreidenko addressed in a recent broadcast. He stated that
“Ukraine is number one in Europe for the number of people killed and injured in road traffic accidents”— Volodymyr Kreidenko.
Kreidenko, a member of the 'Servant of the People' party, stressed that urgent changes are needed on the country's roads. One proposed measure to reduce crashes is introducing a penalty-point system for drivers. However, the bill that would implement this reform is currently stalled in a relevant parliamentary committee.
Despite the delay, about 70% of lawmakers are prepared to vote in favor of the proposal, indicating strong political will to overhaul road safety regulations. Authorities also plan to toughen penalties for habitual speeding, which experts say could significantly cut both the number of accidents and fatalities.
The high death toll from road crashes in Ukraine represents a serious social crisis demanding immediate action. The willingness of deputies to back legislative changes shows growing recognition that reform is essential. Enacting stricter safety standards and holding drivers more accountable could be critical steps toward reducing road deaths and improving overall public safety in the country.
