Rebuilding Ukraine’s Energy Grid

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine has managed to bring back 3.5 GW of generation capacity out of more than 9 GW lost due to Russian attacks. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced plans to restore an additional 4 GW by the end of May, signaling gradual progress in the country’s power system despite ongoing challenges. This recovery is crucial as Ukraine continues to face relentless assaults on its infrastructure.

The restored capacity includes 3.5 GW from thermal power plants (TPPs), combined heat and power plants (CHPs), and hydroelectric plants (HPPs). However, Shmyhal noted that while the situation has improved, the heating season is still underway, and the enemy persists in efforts to cripple the energy grid. The current deficit in the system stands at roughly 1 GW.

Current State of the Energy System

According to the minister, some regions are experiencing no blackouts at all, reflecting effective stabilization measures. Electricity imports now account for about 12% of daily consumption.

Since the start of the war, Ukraine has also brought online 1.5 GW of distributed generation capacity, with plans to add another 1.5 GW in 2026.

Shmyhal emphasized that Ukraine is sourcing equipment for power restoration from decommissioned plants in Latvia, Germany, and Austria.

Restoring energy capacity is vital for Ukraine amid the ongoing war and persistent threats from Russia. The gradual improvement in the power grid not only highlights the government’s efforts to rebuild critical infrastructure but also demonstrates the country’s resilience in the face of adversity.

Successful implementation of these recovery plans could significantly enhance Ukraine’s energy security and stability, which is essential for sustaining the economy and supporting the population’s daily needs.
