Ukraine's Strategy for Fisheries

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine intends to reduce its reliance on imported fish and boost its own aquaculture, with a key focus on the Tyligul Estuary. The war has resulted in the loss of over 70% of traditional fishing grounds, drastically cutting the share of Ukrainian-caught fish on the domestic market to just 15%. Currently, the nation depends on imports for roughly 85% of its fish supply. This situation highlights a critical vulnerability in the country's food security.

A Ten-Year Development Program

A ten-year recovery program has been established to revitalize the fishing industry. The plan includes constructing a fish reproduction complex between 2026 and 2027, followed by the mass stocking of water bodies from 2028 to 2030. After 2031, industrial fish catches are projected to exceed 500 tons annually, with potential sector revenues reaching approximately 80 million hryvnias per year.

The program's funding will be drawn from multiple sources:

• 40% is expected to come from international donors;
• 30% will be provided by the state for infrastructure and canal restoration;
• 30% will be invested by private investors.

These measures are designed to strengthen Ukraine's fisheries sector and reduce dependence on imported products.

Developing domestic fish production is a crucial step for Ukraine's economic recovery and food self-sufficiency, especially as imports become less accessible. Cutting reliance on foreign fish will not only foster local industry but also create new jobs and stimulate investment.
