On her way to the medal, she defeated the European vice-champion from Hungary and a world and European medalist from Norway. In the semifinals, Maria overcame the three-time champion of the Pan American Championship from Canada. However, in the final, she had to concede to the Asian and U20 world champion from Japan with a score of 8:17.

Furthermore, it is reported that the athlete from Russia, two-time Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling Abdulrashid Sadulaev, was denied a visa, so he did not participate in the World Championship.
