In Ukrainian schools, the use of patronymics may be abolished: what will replace it.
According to inkorr.com: In Ukrainian schools, there is an active discussion about the possibility of changing the traditional forms of addressing teachers. Geography teacher Andriy Utkyn shared his opinion on this matter in the social network Threads.
Utkyn shares his personal experience and emphasizes the importance of addressing educators: 'I felt more mature when addressed by patronymic, but I experienced a revival when I was called 'Mr. Andriy'.'
From his words, it is evident that the way of addressing can significantly influence the atmosphere in the school. The traditional address 'by patronymic' adds a certain strictness, while 'Mr./Ms. + name' fosters respect, making communication more friendly and informal.
Teachers' Reaction to the New Approach
- History teacher Zhanna uses the address 'Ms. Zhanna' and is satisfied with it.
- Teacher Valentina noted that students simply address her by her first name, and she appreciates this.
- Teacher Olga gave her students the option to choose a form of address, resulting in 'Ms. Olga'.
- Instructor Marina supports the new approach and feels positively about her name.
- Teacher Valentyn noted that kind addressing makes him more comfortable.
Scholars emphasize that students should perceive their teachers not only as authorities but also as partners in communication. This new approach signals gradual changes in Ukrainian education aimed at improving relationships in educational institutions.
