Ukrainian scientists are studying the island of a former whaling station under an active volcano

The island where whales were once mass killed is now being studied by Ukrainian scientists. On August 30, a documentary film 'Warriors of Science' will be released on the 'Dim' TV channel, which will show the stop of the Antarctic expedition at the volcanic island Deception Island. In the first half of the 20th century, it was home to one of the largest whaling bases in the world. Today, it is a monument to ecological restoration and a natural laboratory.

During the Antarctic expedition, the Ukrainian research vessel 'Noosphere' stopped at Deception Island, which belongs to the South Shetland Islands. This place is a unique combination of volcanic activity, tragic history, and modern scientific research.

Since 1906, one of the largest whaling stations in the world operated here: up to 27 whaling vessels and 12 floating processing bases simultaneously. Only one shore station processed over 5000 whale carcasses annually. To this day, remnants of melting workshops, rusty boilers, and traces of the past, such as a tin of whale oil more than 100 years old, remain on the island.

Today, penguins, seals, and sea lions inhabit the area - nature is gradually restoring balance. The island has become a symbol of transformation - from a place of mass killing to a zone for studying ecology and climate change.

Ukrainian scientists paid special attention to the geological structure of Deception Island. It is a crater of an active volcano, which erupted twice in the 1960s, destroying research stations. In case of new activity, it may cause mass ice melting around.

'99.9% of scientific work is boring sample collection and research. But 0.1% is major discoveries and Hollywood movies about them,' comments journalist Hennadiy Kurkin in the film 'Warriors of Science.'

Let us remind you that on August 30, the premiere of the documentary film-expedition of GP 'MPIU' 'Warriors of Science' about Ukrainian polar researchers will take place on the Ukrainian international broadcasting channels 'Dim', FREEДОМ, UATV.English, and The Gaze. Despite the war, they continue to develop science and defend their country on the front line. The filming took place in Antarctica, at the 'Akademik Vernadsky' polar station, in Ukraine, near the frontline, and on the research vessel 'Noosphere'. The film will be released simultaneously in Ukrainian, English, and Russian. The premiere on the 'Dim' channel is at 21:00, on the FREEДОМ channel - at 10:30, on the YouTube channels UATV.English - at 22:00, and on The Gaze - at midnight.

The film 'Warriors of Science' won the Best Directing award at the National Festival of Documentary Cinema Cinema for Victory.

The presented text describes the research conducted by Ukrainian scientists on Deception Island and its history as a former whaling station. Scientists are studying not only the island itself but also its geological structure related to the active volcano. The film 'Warriors of Science' tells about the transformation of the island from a place of mass whale slaughter into a zone for studying ecology and climate change. Ukrainian polar researchers continue to study and help develop science, demonstrating this in the documentary film.
