According to the resource 'Nature of Kryvorizhzhia', Krivyi Rih is one of the richest regions in Ukraine in terms of the number of mineral resources. Here lies the largest iron ore basin in the country, containing large reserves of iron ores necessary for metallurgy. These iron deposits are located along the rivers Inhulets, Saksahan, Zhovta, and Zelena.

Types of Iron Ore in Kryvorizhzhia

Three main types of iron ore are extracted in Krivyi Rih:

• rich ores for metallurgy;
• magnetite quartzites for further enrichment;
• oxidized iron quartzites that require additional processing.

Details About Specific Types of Ore

Rich ores in Krivyi Rih have reserves of over a billion tons, mostly extracted by underground methods and containing more than 46% pure iron. Magnetite quartzites contain about 10% iron and have a volume of 16 million tons. Oxidized iron quartzites contain from 30 to 46% iron and are extracted by open-pit mining.

Significant efforts and funds are being invested in the explored and developed Kryvyi Rih basin for the extraction of various types of iron ore. The total explored reserves of iron ores in Krivyi Rih exceed 32 billion tons and include not only rich ores, magnetite and oxidized quartzites but also coal, marble, and dolomites.

So far, significant iron ore sections have been discovered, and even a unique quarry has been opened in Krivyi Rih.
