Current State of Ukraine’s Power Grid

According to Espreso.tv: Vitaliy Zaichenko, head of NPC 'Ukrenergo', has provided an update on the nation’s energy system, focusing on how to balance evening consumption peaks and preparations for potential strikes in 2026. He explained that daytime demand is expected to be met through nuclear generation, imports, and renewables. However, managing the evening surges will require active participation from consumers.

Zaichenko stated that by summer 2026, Ukraine will be better prepared for attacks compared to 2025. He emphasized that this year’s situation is considerably easier than in summer 2025, as the country now has more distributed generation capacity, and new power plants are being built with a second layer of protection.

“In the absence of enemy strikes, the country has a high chance of operating without restrictions” – Vitaliy Zaichenko

Widespread blackouts in Ukraine began in the fall of 2022. In 2024, Russia launched a new wave of assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, and from 2024 through 2025, the power grid has operated under constant threat of further attacks.

Zaichenko’s comments highlight Ukraine’s active preparations for potential energy challenges. The focus on distributed generation and new, better-protected power stations reflects a strategy to reduce the system’s vulnerability. This approach could improve the stability of electricity supply amid ongoing threats, which is crucial for the country’s economic growth and social well-being.
